These next few weeks, we will be doing something we love to do every year… student choreography! What is student choreography, exactly?
Every class looks a little different depending on age groups. In the younger classes we work as a large group to create a dance. In older classes, students work in small groups to create their own routine.
Why do we do student choreography?
- Creativity! This is a chance for students to let those creative juices flow and show us what they can do. The time in the studio and the space to bring their own routines to life is a lot of fun for them. We’re willing to bet your dancer is making up their own choreography at home when they’re playing around…now’s the time to let it shine!
- Team work: This gives students a chance to work in teams. Sometimes, dancers may not always have the chance to get to know everyone in their class when they’re busy dancing. The students get to know one another more and practice turn-taking and working together, both valuable life skills in any situation.
- Recital choreography: Believe it or not, a lot of teacher inspiration comes from these student choreography weeks! When we are in the mode of teaching, it’s harder to sit back and assess dancers. When we get to see the class working together and putting their own preferences into choreography, it sparks our creative side too!
January and February can become a little mundane with the winter weather. Student choreography is a way for everyone to spice things up and keep motivation going.
At the end of the second week, students will show each other their creations. Be sure to encourage your dancer to take this time to have fun and express themselves. We can’t wait to see what the dancers will come up with this year!
