Ask any dance parent, and they’ll probably tell you that their child makes up their own dances at home and performs them for family and friends.
One of the most fun aspects of being a dancer is that you can take your skills out into the world and show others. Dance gives you a chance to be creative and express yourself to your favorite music.
Every year at Liberty Dance Center, we give the students a chance to do just that. For two weeks every winter, us teachers hand over the reins and allow the students to create their own choreography. Read on to find out more about the perks of this process.
What happens when students create their own choreography?
- Students get the chance to show off their skills. The dancers include steps that they are most comfortable with and it gives them a chance to highlight their strengths through their own choreography.
- Teachers get a chance to observe. We take into account all that our students choose to showcase and it even inspires ideas for recital choreography!
- As much as it gives our students the chance to highlight their comfort zones, it also gives them the chance to step outside of them. They work in groups to create their dances and this gives them the chance to explore their classmates’ choreographic ideas. It also gives them the valuable experience of working with a group of different personalities and managing ideas and expectations.
So, encourage that creativity when you see it coming out. It benefits your kids in more ways than one!
